No. 5：自然教育プログラム開発担当 エルム
今年のサマーキャンプから始まる、自然教育プログラム。
プログラムの内容、キャンパーたちが体験すること、そして目指すことは？ プログラムの開発を担当するスタッフ、Elmに話を聞きました。

イングリッシュアドベンチャーのキャンプサイトからの眺めをバックに。この地域独自の生物多様性について深く知るために、自然博物館に出かけたり農家の方に話を聞いたりもしています。
Q. Hi Elm! Welcome to Japan and to English Adventure. Please tell us about yourself.
エルム、日本へ、そしてイングリッシュアドベンチャーへようこそ！ 自己紹介をお願いします。
My name is Elm, I am an outdoor education instructor and camp professional from Chicago, in the USA! I love bugs, trees, and all the weird and wonderful things that nature has to offer us! In my free time, I enjoy quilting, camping, cooking, and spending time with my cat!
私の名前はエルムです。アメリカのシカゴ出身、野外教育指導者でキャンプの専門スタッフです。昆虫や樹木、自然の中にある不思議ですばらしいことが大好き！ 自分の時間がある時は、キルトづくりやキャンプ、料理、飼っている猫と過ごしたりします。
Q. Let me ask you about your camp experience – what have you done at camp recently? What do you like about it?
キャンプでの経験について聞きたいのですが、最近はどんなことをしましたか？ キャンプのどんなところが好きですか？
I’ve been going to camp since I was 9 years old back in the states, I fell in love with it, and in college, decided to make it my career. I worked at several camps in America, and found a lot of joy in teaching outdoor education. I think camp is one of the most incredible things we can allow our youth to experience. Giving them the independence to think for themselves, allowing them to discover the joy of nature, and facilitating relationships between campers that improve their social skills. I love the joy and excitement that camp brings to kids, and cannot wait for this summer to start!
アメリカで9歳のころからキャンプに参加していました。キャンプが大好きになり、大学生のときに、キャンプを仕事にしようと決めました。アメリカ国内各地のキャンプで働いて、野外教育を教えることの楽しさに目覚めたのです。
キャンプは、若者が体験できる最高の経験のひとつだと思います。自分自身でものごとを考えたり、自然の楽しさを発見したり、キャンパー同士の人間関係のなかで社会性を育むこともできます。
キャンプで子どもたちが喜び、わくわくするのを見るのが本当に好きなので、夏が待ちきれません！

Q. What motivated you to join EA?
イングリッシュアドベンチャーのキャンプで働こうと思ったきっかけは？
I have always been a traveler. My parents met while traveling abroad, and I got to hear all of their incredible stories and experiences growing up. I have always dreamed of traveling the world, and getting to fully immerse myself in different cultures, and have been extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to do so in places like Ecuador, France and China. When the opportunity to continue my work in outdoor education at an international summer camp here in Japan came about, I was thrilled to say yes!.
ずっと、旅が生活の一部でした。私の両親は国外で旅をしている途中で出会ったし、ふたりが体験してきた特別な体験のことを聞きながら育ちました。世界を旅すること、さまざまな文化にどっぷり浸かってみたいとずっと夢見てきました。これまで、エクアドルやフランス、中国でそんな体験をする機会にめぐまれて、本当にラッキーだと思っています。今回、野外教育の仕事をここ日本のサマーキャンプでやらないかという話があったときは、喜んで参加を決めました。
Q. You are developing a new program for this year’s Summer Camp. Would you please give us a little preview?
今年のサマーキャンプで自然教育プログラムを担当するそうですが、少しプログラムのことを教えてもらえますか？
The outdoor education program I’ve been developing spans from first grade to ninth, and covers a variety of topics that directly take inspiration from what campers are learning in their schools. The program adapts with the camper, and my hope is for the information to build on itself as the campers grow alongside the lessons. Whether your camper is in first grade, learning the basics of habitats and biomes, or going into ninth grade and learning about agriculture and human impact, my goal is for a camper to never have a repeating lesson.
私が今開発している野外教育プログラムは、小学1年生から中学3年生までを対象としていて、学校で学んでいる内容ともつながるように、さまざまなテーマを扱っています。プログラムはキャンパーの知識や理解度にあわせて作られていて、キャンパーが成長するにつれて学んだことが次の学びへとつながっていくことを目指しています。
たとえば、小学1年生のキャンパーは生き物のすみかや生態系の基礎について学びます。中学3年生になると農業や人間活動が環境に与える影響について学びます。キャンパーがキャンプに戻ってくるたび、新しいことを学べるようにプログラムをつくっています。
キャンプサイト敷地内で、植物や昆虫を採集。キャンパーたちに自然の神秘を感じてもらえるよう、着々と準備しています！
Q. What do you want the campers to learn, and gain from the program?
キャンパーたちに何を学び、持ち帰って欲しいですか？
I really hope that this program will empower campers to think deeply about the world they live in, as well as the environment that they interact with day to day. I want to see kids coming away from camp with a better sense of their role in our world, and the ability to explain and talk about what they love about nature in English.
このプログラムを通じて、キャンパーたちが自分たちの暮らす世界や、日々触れている自然環境について深く考えられるようになってほしいです。そして、自分たちがこの世界の中で担っている役割を考え、自然のどんなところが好きなのか英語で説明したり語ったりできるようになってくれたら嬉しいです。
Q. Any message to the campers who are coming to Summer Camp?
サマーキャンプに参加するキャンパーへのメッセージをお願いします。
I am so excited to meet each and every one of you, and to be able to share my love of our planet with you. I am looking forward to seeing your smiling faces, singing funny songs, and learning more about you!
みなさん一人ひとりに会えることを、とても楽しみにしています。そして、私が持っている地球や自然への愛情をみなさんと分かち合えることを心から楽しみにしています。
みなさんの笑顔を見たり、一緒におもしろい歌を歌ったり、そしてみなさんのことをもっと知ったりできるのが今から楽しみです。サマーキャンプで会いましょう！
