Summer Camp: Challenge (Long Camp)

For campers who want a longer adventure, we are running several nine day camps this summer!!

An Unforgettable Nine Days with Friends

Campers will spend all nine days as a group, allowing them to form stronger bonds and bringing them closer than ever before.

We will provide dedicated staff for long camp. That means campers will have twice as much time to bond not only with other campers, but with their team leaders!

NEW! Long Camp for Challenge Campers

This year, we will hold one long camp session for the Challenge Program campers.

Long Camp 1:G3-4[August 19 – August 27]

Just like in our five day programs, there will be activity masters for each activity. Activity masters are specialists in their fields and help ensure campers get the most out of each activity.

Water play
Camp games
Overnight hike & camping
Bug hunting
Slackline & low ropes course
Camp fire & toasted marshmallow
Dance party
River rafting in Minakami, Gunma
*Activities may vary due to weather and other eventualities.

What’s the difference between regular camp and long camp?

Long camp is almost twice as long as regular camp. Here a few benefits having an extra four days of camp:

Feature 1: Duration!
Most of our campers don’t want to go home at the end of camp, and we get a lot of requests from parents to provide longer camps.

Feature 2:Everyone can stay together till the end!
In 2016 and 2017, campers who wanted to stay longer came to two consecutive camps.

The camp duration was the same as long camp. However, campers had to see off their teammates on the fifth day and join a brand new group.

They had to say good-bye to their friends in the middle of their camp experience. This made campers feel a bit sad and lonely.

But no one leaves in the middle of long camp! Campers can enjoy their experience with their friends until the last day of camp.

We believe that a camper’s bond with their team leader is one of the most important aspects of summer camp. That bond will be strengthened by the additional time they will spend together!

Feature 3:More chances to master activities
During regular camps, campers don’t always have time to dig deep into each activity. For our long camps, campers will get a second chance to do some favorite camp activities!

For example, campers might get a second try at completing a particularly difficult bouldering route that they were unable to complete their first time. Through these challenges, campers will begin to learn the causes of early failures and the importance of not giving up.

Giving campers more chances to try an activity helps them begin to build mastery and self-confidence!

Feature 4:Two Special Activities for Long Camp
River Rafting: Long Camp campers will go on a rafting trip in Minakami, one of Japan's premier outdoor centers! We’ve partnered with our friends at Canyons to ensure that we have trained specialists keeping kids safe and dry on the boats - but hopefully not too dry!

In addition, long campers will spend a day competing against each other in a special multi-activity event we’re calling the olympics!

Long Camp FAQ

Q. My child’s friend will come to a regular five day camp. Will there be a chance to meet up if my child is doing long camp?

A. Yes! Assuming your child’s friend is also an immersion camper, they will see each other during mealtimes and some activities such as the dance party and swimming.

Q. Do you provide laundry service?

A. We will provide laundry service on the fifth day of long camp. Please only pack enough clothes for five days of camp.

Q. Can my child bring school homework?

A. We usually ask campers not to bring homework to camp as we believe that camp is a time to separate from campers’ non-camp lives. However, during long camp, we’ll relax that policy just a little bit. Campers can bring homework and they will be allowed to do homework during their limited free time. Please note that English Adventure cannot help in any way with homework.

It will not be easy to do homework while other campers are having fun in the outdoors. Doing homework will limit camper’s time to spend with teammates.

We understand that parents worry about homework. However, camp is all about learning things that aren’t learned in the classroom.

Q. My child might become homesick. How will you handle that?

A. Many parents are worried about homesickness. We find that most campers soon get over any homesick feelings as they begin to make friends and become involved activities.

We’re certainly ready to support all campers with homesickness! Not only young children get homesick. It is natural to feel lonely when away from your family.

Most of the time, campers get homesick at the beginning of camp. The duration of camp will not have a large affect on homesickness.

If your child tells you that he got homesick during camp, please praise them for being able to overcome those feelings!

Q. My child is not confident about spending nine days only speaking English. What if he/she uses Japanese during long camp?

A. As is our policy for every Immersion camper, we require campers to speak ONLY English throughout their time at camp. Please see our policy on English speaking in the Immersion Program.

Note that the same rule will apply to campers whose English level is not high enough for Immersion Program. Please talk to your child about our English policy before choosing programs.

If you don’t know which program to choose, please visit here for more information.

Long Camps will be conducted at our private site in Tsunan, Niigata.
