Director Dave Paddock combines a passion for science and nature with thorough outdoor skills and credentials, to create memorable recreational and educational programs.
A deep interest in nature led Dave to study biology at Indiana University, focusing on field studies in ecology, botany, and mycology. While a university student, Dave also began the practice of aikido, which led to his eventual move to Japan.
In 1996, Dave was accepted to the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program. He taught in Kanagawa high schools and Sagamihara (Kanagawa) junior high schools for six years. During this period, Dave developed the concept of creating unique outdoor programs in Japan, and in 2003 began building English Adventure.
Dave has also been an instructor for many years with Japan Overseas Education Services (JOES), a respected foundation serving families who have lived abroad. In 2005, Dave was asked to create and teach the first English-language science class offered by JOES.
Being an outdoor professional demands more than normal classroom teaching experience, or simply enjoying the outdoors. Through ongoing training, Dave ensures that EA provides the safe, high quality experiences that participants deserve. He holds numerous certifications in outdoor safety, education and recreation. Dave also studies frequently with other guides and outdoor professionals, and attends workshops and professional events to improve his skills. This knowledge is then passed to the EA staff through regular training, with the aim of creating one of the most professional outdoor organizations in Japan.
Dave also works as a consultant and guide for corporate and educational clients and other nature-related organizations, sharing his love and knowledge of Japans nature from a unique international perspective.
