Native-English speakers living in
Japan
International School students who
are comfortable in English
English Adventure was first created to serve the returnee community
enrolled in JOES, ROOTS and other schools dedicated to maintaining
returnees' precious English skills. Our Immersion Courses are 24-hour
English-only environments, and are the closest your child can come
to an overseas experience without a plane ticket!
Immersion Courses are not English classes -- we
provide a true American-style camp experience along with outstanding
nature education, and English is the living tool that campers use
to enjoy these experiences. That's why English Adventure Summer
Camp is great for non-Japanese campers too! |
Kids
with even NO English experience
Kids who are learning English, but
still need some support in Japanese
Some returnee kids who have not retained
a high level of English
Whatever your child's English level, English Adventure promises
an exciting, secure experience that will give your child improved
communication skills and a positive attitude to English. Our structured
camp environment and teaching methods allow your child to quickly
use English in daily living. The atmosphere is much like an overseas
homestay, but our caring bilingual staff are always ready to give
your child support in language he or she can understand. |
| Not Sure
Which Course Is Suitable? |
| Some
returnee kids lose a lot of their English skill after some years
in Japan. That's why English Adventure's programs are here! If you're
not sure which course is best for your child at this point, we'll
be happy to discuss your child's case, and suggest the best option.
Please contact English Adventure anytime, in English or Japanese. |

| Who
are the staff? |
The Summer Camp staff
are from several countries including the USA, Canada, Australia,
and Japan (returnee). They include JOES teachers and assistant
language teachers (ALTs) from junior high and high schools.
Most of them attended summer camps as children, and even worked
as camp counselors in their home countries. They are excited
to create the same experience in Japan!
In addition to the regular camp counselors, we also have Japanese
assistants, to make sure your child gets all the attention
and care he/she needs. |
| How
many students per staff member? |
We plan a ratio of
approximately 8 students per 1 staff member. Not only will
this ensure adequate supervision and safety, but also lots
of personal contact between your child and the staff. |
| My
child is young / small, and so I'm a little worried. How will
the children be divided? |
For some activities,
the children will be grouped according to age and/or physical
ability, to make sure that everyone can enjoy participating
safely, and at a level they can understand. When appropriate,
both younger and older campers will participate together.
We believe that it is valuable to have this exchange between
different ages, sexes, and cultures!
In fact, we typically have more elementary school students
that junior high students. This may be because more junior
high students are busy with prep school, club, etc. So your
younger child will have many friends of the same age and size! |
| My
child doesn't know anyone else. Can you make sure that he/she
has a good time? |
Most children come
to camp alone, but they quickly make friends! Your child will
be in the same group and with the same counselor much of the
time, so they become a close team.
We do several team-building and trust-building activities
at the start of camp, to help everyone get into the right
spirit. Still, on sports day and in several other activities,
everyone will have a chance to enjoy some very friendly competition! |
| My
child returned to Japan several years ago, and has become weak
in English. Will he/she be OK? |
We have students with
a very wide range of abilities, from perfectly fluent to somewhat
weak English. Because we work in small groups, and because
we create a cooperative atmosphere, everyone can be included,
no matter what their ability! The kids freely help each other,
so there's no need to worry.
Many parents commented that their children returned home speaking
English more smoothly, so we hope your child will have the
same benefit. |
| My
child has no experience hiking. Will he/she be OK? |
No problem! We will
have several hiking courses available, ranging from very easy
to challenging. We encourage students to challenge themselves,
but they can choose the course they wish to hike.
Before hiking, we stretch and warm up to prevent injury. Also,
we teach the children some basic rules of hiking, for their
own safety and for good manners. Finally, we have staff at
the front and rear of each hiking group, to make sure that
no one gets lost and that everyone is feeling fine.
Last year, most kids told us that the hikes were challenging,
but that they had a good time and were happy they did it.
That's the feeling we want them to have! |
| My
child has never stayed away from home, and might become homesick.
How do you handle that? |
We have experience
dealing with homesick children. They generally forget about
their homesickness after a day or two of having fun! We will
give them the support they need to enjoy the camp. But just
in case, they can call you from the public phone. Please include
a phone card in your child's bag if you are worried about
this. |
| How
can I contact my child or the staff during the camp? |
You can call the campsite
office 24 hours a day, to give us a message or speak directly
to your child. If we are out doing an activity, they will
pass a message to us as quickly as possible.
Also you can call Dave Paddock anytime on his mobile phone.
At some places in the camp, the signal is very weak. If you
cannot connect, please leave a message at the campsite office,
and we will contact you right away.
|
| Where
will the children eat? |
Most meals will be
eaten in the cafeteria. The menu is quite varied, and the
meals are all nutritious and filling. English Adventure also
provides plenty of snacks and drinks throughout the day. We
have a very active camp, but we make sure everyone has lots
of energy! Also, for safety and health, we make sure everyone
has enough to drink during outdoor activities. |
